Bass Biology

- Bass are a member of the sunfish family.

- When is the spawn triggered?  The number one natural triggering mechanism is the direction or angle of light penetration into the body of water.  It is when this light penetration hits that certain point, coinciding with both water temperature (typically 60 - 65 degrees) and water clarity that activates their biological clock and sends their hormones racing.

- Why do bass nest in pea gravel or sandy bottoms.  The answer is because their eggs are sticky and need some sort of textured bottom to stick and not get swept away by wave action.

- How can you tell the age of a bass?  The answer is by the number of rings on the bass.

- Why are fish larger in the Southern parts of the US?  It is simply because they live longer.
