Senko Fishing

Back to Expert Articles

Fishing the Senko has been a like a staple in my tournament success over the past 5 years.

My favorite presentation is to " Skip" the Senko where no bait has gone before!  I like to target far under docks, pontoon boats,  in the middle of a brush pile, deep in the back of a fallen log, under overhanging brush, back in a pocket of lillypads & grass, etc.  For me, a spinning combo is just more versatile than a casting rod/reel.  I like to use 14lb Fireline, allowing me to really land the big ones and not worry so much about abrasions from the thick cover, under wooden or metal docks, pontoon boats, etc.

I've actually fished with Pros who use a 10lb leader at the end and do the same thing.  But guess what, they broke off 2 - 3 times throughout the tournament, so I stick with my old favorite, the 14lb Fireline.

The other key factor to successfully using this technique is a good weedless hook.  I prefer a 2/O or 3/O weedless Eagle Claw hook and simply hook the Senko wacky style.

There have also been occasions where I've been very successful rigging this bait texas style, with no weight and on 10lb fluorocarbon line concentrating on submerged weeds in 3-5 feet of clear water.

When to use it:
This presentation is exceptional on cloudy days, moderately clear to dingy water and 1 - 5 feet of water.  Over the years I've really honed this technique down and can literally skip a Senko into a 6 inch wide by 3 inch tall opening in a dock from 30 - 40 feet away.  In order to do this time and time again - everything matters! What I mean by this is concentration, equipment, rigging, etc.  It just takes time, practice and adjustments, but when you get it down, look out, your going to land some Lunkers!

What rig to use:
- 5 1/2 inch Senko (Green Pumpkin is my favorite)
- 14lb Berkley Fireline
- 6 1/2 ft. Spinning Combo (I use an med. actn. All Star Graphite Rod and Shimano Stradic Reel)
- 2/0 Weedless Eagle Claw Hook rigged wacky style.
