Rod Selection & Popular Baits

Back to Expert Articles

JD's Tips on Baits and the Appropriate Rod to Use (General Rules of Thumb):

Buzzbaits - Use a lightweight, sensitive, 6 1/2-foot- to 7-foot rod with a medium action and a medium/soft tip and min of 17lb mono or a higher strength braid (up to 50lb)

Spinnerbaits - Use a lightweight, sensitive, 6 1/2-foot- to 7-foot rod with a medium action and a medium/soft tip and 17lb mono.

Crankbaits - Use a lightweight, sensitive, 6- to 7-foot fiberglass rod with a medium or light action tip, depending on the size and weight of the lure you will generally go with with 12-14lb mono.

Topwaters - Use a lightweight, sensitive, 6- to 7-foot fiberglass rod with a medium or light action tip, depending on the size and weight of the lure with 12-14lb mono (braid if using frogs or dressed spoons over pads or mats).

Worms - Use a lightweight, very sensitive rod, 6 1/2 feet to 7 1/2 feet, made of graphite with a medium action and a medium light tip with 12 - 17lb mono.

Drop Shot - Use a 6 1/2 ft, very sensitive, medium -medium light, fast action tip rod with 6 - 8 lb fluorocarbon line.

Jigs - Use a lightweight, very sensitive rod, 6 1/2 feet to 7 1/2 feet, made of graphite with a medium action and a medium light tip with 14 - 17lb mono.

Flipping and Pitching - Use a lightweight 7 - 7 1/2-foot graphite rod with a stiff backbone and a medium fast tip with no less than 17lb mono or braid line up to 50lb.

JD's Added Tips:  Remember, light weight is key, especially for tournament fishing.  I recommend going to outdoor shows and picking up two or three rods for each type of bait.  For Example, the last time I shopped for a Jig & Pig rod I had three different brands all together and the choice I went with became obvious.
