Rod Selection
Back to Expert Articles
Here are some
"General Rules of Thumb" to go by when selecting
a rod for a specific type of fishing:
Bait Casting Rods:
Type of Bait, Rod Length, Action
Flipping Jigs, 7 – 8, Med Hvy – Hvy
Carolina Worm, 6 ½ – 7, Med – Med Hvy
Crank Baits, 6 ½ - 7, Med – Med Hvy
Texas Worms, 6 – 6 ½, Med – Med Hvy
Spinner Baits, 6 – 6 ½, Med – Med Hvy
Top Waters, 5 ½ - 6, Lgt – Med
One of my favorite baits to fish is the topwater scum frog
through lily pads, scum and matted vegetation. In
this case I use a 7 ft custom Med Hvy All Star rod with a
fast action tip. This is basically my 1/2 - 1 oz
spinnerbait rod. For line I'll use either 17lb Stren
abrasion resistant line (if I decide to use a mono) or a
20-30lb braid.
Spinning Rods:
Type of Bait, Rod Length, Action
Plastic Worm, 6 – 6 ½, Med Hvy – Hvy
Crank Baits, 6 – 6 ½, Med – Med Hvy
Spinner Baits, 6 – 6 ½, Med – Med Hvy
Top Waters, 6 – 6 ½, Lgt – Med
Drop Shot, 6 ½, Med Lgt - Med
