It’s springtime and a gentleman’s fancy turns to love………..Baloney it does. All the gentleman I know fancy catching Bass and a lot of them. The days are getting longer; the water temperature is rising and the Bass are on the move. Moving from their wintering spots up to the shallow water to spawn.
So where are the Bass exactly???? Well that’s the question, let’s see if we can figure this out. Are they still deep??? Probably still some of them are. Are they staging?? That is, are they starting to move up to shallow water via the tapering points and channels, yeah probably some of them are. Or are they up shallow already???? Yeah they probably are. So lets review for a minute, we decided that the fish are still deep,
staging, and shallow. Great, so where do we go from here?? We have to decide what fish we are going to target. My suggestion is target the shallow fish.
From past experience, the shallow fish are more active and are easier to catch. You may find that there are more fish still in deep water or in the mid-range of 9-15 feet, but the shallow water fish are the fish to target. The best spots are going to be the ones that are close to the deeper water with plenty of cover, such as down trees, stumps, boat docks, or rock piles.
I have the best luck fishing these spots using a small 4” grub on a 1/8 round jig head. The light jig head causes the bait to fall real slow and drives the bass crazy. Remember that different conditions dictate different approaches, but don’t overlook those shallow pre spawn fish.
