Post Spawn - Largemouth

Back to Expert Articles

Once the bass have finished spawning and have "spawned out", they become very sluggish and finicky towards baits. This is the time when you will get strikes out of instinct. Location is very important here and being able to get the lure right in front of the fish to draw that instinct bite is important.

Unfortunately the time to catch that Lunker Largy has passed and the transition back to deeper water begins. Some of the smaller females can still be caught in the shallow bays.

After the spawn, look in the same places as before the spawn. Bass are again in a transition or migration period. Finding them will much depend on your depth finder aptitude. The areas between the coves and points, especially where there is structure is going to be your place to key in on.

Lunker Tip: If the weather has been abnormally cold during the post spawn, spawning will probably be delayed. A good tactic here is to look farther back in the bays or creek arms than you may have originally thought.
