Jig & Pig

Back to Expert Articles

When is the best time to use a jig & pig? The answer is any time you have heavy cover or want to catch a big Lunker Bass. When it comes to picking colors, stick with the basics on these baits. You can rarely go wrong with a black or black and blue combination. The next best colors to use are the natural colors like pumpkin, green pumpkin, watermelon, etc.).

If you want to take the colors of jig and pig fishing to an advanced level you will need to go and catch some of the forage (crawfish) in the body of water you will be fishing. The idea is to "Match The Hatch" as it is often called in the industry. Jigs resemble crawfish the best, however if bass are feeding on some type of shad or fish, then match the color accordingly. There is no BIG secret to this - match the color of the forage!

There are some basic strategies to use with colors and those are, use the darker colors (blacks, blues and combinations of chartreuse and red) in stained and muddy water and use the more natural colors (green pumpkin, watermelon) in clearer water with 2 ft of visibility or more.

In tournaments I recommend using the 20-50lb braid line, especially in stained to muddy water. The only time I use a fluorocarbon or fluoroclear line is in clear lake situations with patches of heavy cover, submerged brush piles and submerged wood.

JD's Rig:

- Rod: 7 - 7 1/2 ft Med Hvy casting rod
* I use a Daiwa Light & Tough (TL-76T-5FB) Flipping Rod.

- Reel: Use a quality reel with a high gear ratio - 6.3:1.
* I use a Team Daiwa-X Series (TD-X103HSDL).

- Line: 20 - 50lb Braid Line
* I like both the Berkley Fire Line and Spiderwire Stealth.
